I would like a birch tree on the east side of our house. I would really love a full grown oak tree in the northwest corner of the lot but that won't happen in my lifetime.

Also: although I love how they look when they bloom, crabapple trees are the work of the devil. Really I'd avoid any tree that produces any type of berry.
Big tree or little tree? Ornamental? There is so much to think about when you plant a tree. It is like having a child. It will be with you for years!! Red Maple is beautiful.
I have heard great things about non fruit bearing flowering pears. They don't get HUGE, but provide decent shade and look nice. I think they also make non fruit bearing crabapples. I think a lot of the trees in Refrew Park are the non fruit bearing, but they still flower.
When I saw you came out of blog retirement, I was excited. Left me dreaming of the posts to come: maybe stories about the new bf or homeowner problems...
But this left me less than enthralled. I get that planting trees is a bfd since they're their forever but...

Go with a maple. We planted one out front, and it has grown a ton. It looks really pretty in the fall, too.
