I know most of you think I'm pretty much the world's biggest cynic and nothing is good enough for me, and also that I hate school, everything about it, and that no one is as good/smart as they should be. Well, I'd like to take this opportunity to show that this, as all things, is not 100% true.
I first had Dr. Rick Morrow my junior (P-1) year of college in pathophysiology. He still wrote out notes on the old overhead projector, and handed out outlines that appeared to be from some sort of MS-DOS type program (and worth noting, it was a three hour lecture). However, I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He had been teaching for 36 years at this point so maybe it was that he had weeded out all the nonsense, or maybe he was actually the first professor who's goal was for us to learn the important points and not a contest to see how many trivial facts or equations we could memorize because in reality we will never remember because we can look them up just as easily. I had him again for Principles of Drug Action II last year, and chose to take his elective, Exercise Physiology, this semester. Tonight was his final lecture of the semester and what turned out to be his last lecture as a Drake professor. I didn't know this until getting to class. We are under severe winter storm warnings so he had typed up all the necessary notes before hand in case the University closed (yeah right that never happens). So for 45 minutes I listened to this man on his soap box talking about what's wrong with drug companies and comparing them to Cuban automakers in 1957 (it was actually a very good analogy and I will elaborate if you would like, but I'll spare you on this post in case you don't care). A fitting last lecture for a man who loved to tell a good story.
Anyway, after 38 years Dr. Morrow is retiring from Drake. He was always one of the 2-3 professors that I wouldn't have minded having for every single class. Drake is losing one of its best professors. There, I'm not always a jerk :-D
